Tropical Cyclone Lua made landfall along the Pilbara coast at Pardoo, near Port Hedland (approx 450km south of Broome) on Saturday, March 17, 2012. TC Lua brought hurricane force winds and torrential rain to the north-west coastline in the lead up to Saturday when it crossed the coast as a severe category 4 cyclone.
At Cygnet Bay, conditions deteriorated rapidly on Thursday and Friday with periods of heavy rain (180mm total between Thursday and Saturday) and strong winds. With Broome on cyclone (yellow) alert, businesses in town were shut over the weekend as wind speeds exceeded 90km/hr.
